Gani died for daring to be emotional and passionate. He died after his ‘spiritual’ comment on the 2003 election and finally buried after his comment on thefailed 3rd term agenda in 2007. The evalasting legacy beffiting of him is for those that benefitted from him, especially those he represented in the courts free to institute a scholarship program for law, Political sciences etc for the next 20 years. Especially for those from poor background like them. No fretting, it is cheap. These new group will take over from here/there. This concerns most specially the ‘dismissed’ Ife student of the early 90s.
“Take over Politically, all other benefits follows”, these were the solemn words of Bamidele Aturu in the 90s, What has become of that? What has also become of Wole Soyinka who is intelectually, spiritually and tempermental capable of leadership, with over 50% followership in Nigeria. The battle is no more combative, sloganeering or personal but diplomatic, persuasive and strategic. It is even more poisnous now (ask Tunde Bakare or Agbakoba), but it has got to be won before the the new Spiritual civilisation is irreversible corrupted in Nigeria.
Gani though you understandably walked me out of your chambers on our first meeting, it never affected my appreciation. You will always be loved. Rest in Peace.

Rest In Peace, GANI...
A man of uncompromising principles, champion of the oppressed, thorn in the flesh of corrupt politicians and dictators, a beacon of hope for a bright future for Nigeria. Your work was not in vain. It will go on until the great vision that you had for the country is actualized. Sun re o!

To Chief Gani Fawehinmi,SAM,SAN.
The poor people's hero,
Your footsprint remains indelible on the sand of time,
just a month after your demise,a website has been built to immortalise your heroic deed ,this make me believe that Nigerians know their true heroes.
When you lived most of the Nigeria elite knew you not,
but after your call to the higher service,
they are now paying lip service tribute to the heavens. But that is mortal men for you.
But you know that they are shearing crocodile tears.

We ,the poor masses love you, even in death,
but who will be like you!
You are our hero, you live forever in our hearts,
May your ebulient soul Rest in Peace,
as you joined the legendary ancestors of the ages.
Adieu.

Little i did know about Gani until he is dead. With the story being read, he needs to be immortalised. He had suffered on the course of fighting justice irrespective of person. Dele Giwa case is on hold, another guardian editor is killed recently. Promising that the killer will be fished out by police. Bola Ige and Funsho William were killed such way. Who will now stand and fight for our unjust treatment. We will forever miss you. Adeiu

A lot has been said about this great man but I feel compelled to add that Gani Fawehinmi was indeed not only a great man, but a good man. A thoroughly good man, who will not abide injustice in any form. A man who says what he means, means what he says and most importantly, practices what he preaches. He was a giant by the sheer force of his personality and the intergrity of his character. He did not suffer fools gladly. He was a formidable adversary, as some who have sat on opposing sides in the courtroom from him will testify. I had the priviledge of meeting him in the early 1990's when I along with some of my student union comrades (Great Ife!)found ourselves on the wrong side of the University authorities. Gani was the only Nigerian lawyer who stood up to the challenge, to defend us, in the predicament we found ourselves - pro bono publico(without payment, for the public good)as they say in legal parlance. Defend us he did, and robustly too because in the end he secured a win for us. He was a briliant lawyer, an astute thinker and he had such a way with words. I and many others owe him a debt of gratitude we can never repay, even if we tried. I suppose the best way is to emulate him by living a life that makes a difference. I had not kept up with the news for a few days and I was stunned when I heard that he had passed away. For sure, the world and Nigeria will not be the same without him. Today, a little piece of him lives on, in all of us who have met him or indeed heard or read about him. And that my friends, is an insiprational legacy worthy of emulation. I doubt if we will ever see another Nigerian like him. He was honest, upstanding and outstanding. He was real, dependable and ever constant in his principles. He proudly refused to betray his principles when doing so would have meant living a peaceful, stress-free life. He truly loved the masses, the students and fought for those who couldn't do so themselves - without ever expecting anything back. He loved Nigeria, the land of his birth and expected so much from her. He did the right things because they were the right things to do even when those things were not popular. He was a remarkable man. I salute you Gani. Good night, sleep well and goodbye. You will be missed, you this colossus among men! Aluta continua, victoria acerta.

Indeed the entire populace of this great nation has lost a rare gem. Great Gani fought tirelessly to enthrone an egalitarian Nigerian society; I hope that the Nigerian government will learn from the life and death of the late Senior Advocate of the Masses.
